Duck Numbers Remain Strong as Pond Counts Approach Record Levels Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its preliminary report on breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May. The total duck population is nearly 45.6 million, which is 35 percent above the long-term average. “These are encouraging numbers, especially the increase in mallards, blue-winged teal, gadwalls, and pintails,” says Dale Humburg, DU’s chief scientist. “Favorable habitat conditions in many regions should support a strong breeding effort.” Be sure to share the news by forwarding this e-mail to your friends!
